Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have 'morphed' into another type of rock. These rocks were once Igneous or Sedimentary rocks which have been subjected to intense pressure and heat. Common types includes, Gneiss, Schist, Marble and Slates.

Gneiss

This common type of Metamorphic rock is found widely distributed around the world. It is composed of layers of sheet-like planar structures. These structures have alternating darker and lighter coloured bands, known as "gneissic banding".

Slate

Slate is a fine-grained, metamorphic rock which has been derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash. Slate occurs in a variety of colors, even from a single locality. Used widely as a roofing material.

Schist

Provided in fully labelled trays.

Schist is a metamorphic rock which has medium to large grains of mica flakes situated in it. Individual mineral grains in schist are drawn out into flaky scales by heat and pressure, these are visible to the naked eye. Schist is determined when the individual mineral grains split off easily into flakes or slabs.

Quartzite

Quartzite is a hard rock which originated from pure quartz sandstone. The sandstone was converted into quartzite through heat and pressure. In its purest form, quartzite is white to gray. Because of its hardness and angular shape, crushed quartzite is often used as railway ballast.
